Can Padel Dethrone Pickleball in the US?

2026-01-14

The battle for America's racket sport throne is heating up. While pickleball has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years, padel is quietly gaining momentum, sparking a debate: can this European import overtake the homegrown favorite?

The Numbers GamePickleball remains the undisputed leader. With over 36.5 million players, it has become a cultural phenomenon. However, padel is growing at a staggering rate—up 123% from 2022 to 2023, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA).

The Court ConundrumA key difference lies in the courts. Pickleball is accessible, often played on converted tennis courts. Padel, however, requires specialized enclosed courts, which are more expensive to build. This "supply bottleneck" has limited its spread but also contributes to its exclusive, club-based image.

The VerdictIndustry experts believe padel won't replace pickleball anytime soon. Instead, it is carving out a niche as a "premium" alternative. As one analyst noted, pickleball is for the masses, while padel appeals to those seeking a more social, strategic, and upscale experience.
